“Musician as Maggid” is a musical exploration of Jewish and Australian stories, performed by Meyers & McNamara and featuring mandolin virtuoso Luke Plumb, as well as special guest storytellers. We will present musical responses to the true story of a group of Jewish musicians interned in Australia during WWII, as well as to traditional fairytales and personal stories.
Repertoire has been chosen from European classical and folk traditions as well as original and improvised music. It will be a special, once-off concert held at the Jewish Synagogue in Hobart (Australia’s oldest synagogue).
We received support from Arts Tasmania as well as the Folk Federation of Tasmania 2018 Grant to develop a project based on questions that have affected our creative practice for some time now: To what extent do our personal experiences affect our ‘traditional’ music making and musicianship? What would happen if we took stories, imagined and real, from another time and place, and responded to them musically? Would we receive in return entirely new manifestations and ways of knowing ourselves that relate to our current time and place?
